The importance of sealants in preventing caries

Posted on 9/25/2023 by Martin Periodontics
The importance of sealants in preventing cariesA tooth sealant is a thin plastic coating that is placed over the chewing surface of the enamel, especially for the molars and premolars. The enamel is prone to cavities, in its natural state. The molars and premolars specifically are prone to cavities since they have many bumps and depressions that facilitate the storage of food debris that remains on the teeth after eating.

How sealants work

Tooth sealants act as a barrier against harmful microorganisms. They also protect your teeth from the debris that clogs the surface, crevices, and ridges of your teeth. A liquid sealant might be applied to the enamel, then cured with heat, leaving the floor of the tooth smooth, clean, and safe.

Who benefits from these sealants?

Dental sealants are for everyone regardless of age and gender. Children and teens are however the most usual candidates for sealants due to their love for crunchy and sweet foods that can cause cavities. Sealants offer them maximum protection and safety against cavities, improving their oral health. You do not have to be worried about limiting the amount of candy your child eats anymore, just make sure they observe oral hygiene after eating. This means, brushing and flossing. Adults also benefit from dental sealants, especially for people with deep grooves and cracks on their teeth.

The procedure

The process is a brief, painless procedure that can be achieved in one dental visit. The dentist dries the enamel first, then applies an acid solution to the chewing floor to roughen the enamel. A sealant is then applied on top and cured with a special light. Sealants are replicable, they can however last for more than a decade if taken care of. They are FDA-approved procedures that cause no harm to the patient's health.

Dental sealants are therefore an effective way to prevent cavities and tooth decay, especially in children. Talk to our dentists today for a restorative and successful journey. We will be with you the entire journey.
