Dental bridges are a lifesaver if you are missing teeth. They allow you to smile, eat, drink, and laugh without worrying about gaps in your teeth. If you are considering replacing your missing teeth, here is some information about dental bridges.

What Are Bridges?

Dental bridges consist of prosthetic teeth that are cemented or attached to adjacent teeth. There are different kinds of bridges, but all bridges replace teeth that are next to each other or across from each other in your jaw. Traditional bridges consist of prosthetic teeth that are cemented between adjacent teeth, or they hook to adjacent teeth. Cantilever bridges attach to only one side of adjacent teeth. They are perfect when you need to replace your front teeth. In a Maryland bridge, all of the hardware for the bridge is located behind the teeth.

History

Dental bridges have been around for centuries. In fact, some of the earliest dental work done on humans were dental bridges. In the past, prosthetic teeth were made from bone and tied to adjacent teeth with gold or silver wire.

How Do I Get a Bridge?

Bridges work much like other restorative dental items. You will need to see a dentist for an examination. The dentist can then recommend which type of bridge you need. They will also take x-rays and photos of your jaws in order to ensure the prosthetic teeth look like your other teeth. You also need to decide whether you want a fixed (or permanent) bridge or a removable bridge. Ask the dentist which one they prefer.

Dental Care for Bridges

If you have a removable bridge, you will be able to take it out to clean it. Be sure that you don't use abrasive toothpaste or hard bristles to clean your bridge. If you have a fixed bridge, it is very important that you brush and floss your bridge along with the other teeth. You need to floss underneath the bridge as well. If you care for your bridge properly, it will last you for years.
