Is Crown Lengthening Worth It?

Crowns are synthetic tooth options that cover and mimic the look of your natural tooth. They are recommended for broken, decayed, discolored, or cracked teeth. These dental tools help to conceal any defects in your teeth. Crown lengthening is done to expose more of your tooth's surface to a crown. With a larger surface exposed, there is a higher chance of the crowns staying in the correct position and not falling off. But is the procedure worth it?

When is Crown Lengthening Needed?

Crown lengthening is crucial when you don't have an adequate tooth surface to hold the crown. If you have broken or chipped teeth, a crown might not securely attach to those teeth. It is also necessary when the teeth are short or have decayed quite severely beneath the gum line. A decayed or broken tooth has a reduced healthy part. Thus, it can affect the success of tooth restoration appliances.

This procedure reduces the gum tissue, and the bone is shaved to expose a larger tooth surface. When you have a well-fitting crown, oral hygiene will be seamless. Crown lengthening works to increase the success rate of dental appliances.

What to Expect During Crown Lengthening

Crown lengthening can be done safely in the outpatient setting, and you can comfortably go home after the procedure. The time it takes to complete depends on the number of teeth, jaw tissue, or bone that needs extracting.

Local anesthesia is administered to make the procedure painless and comfortable. An oral surgeon cuts your gums and separates them from the teeth. Doing so exposes the bone and roots of your mouth. Next, they disinfect and clean the area and remove the gum tissues or bone as required. After the removal, the area is sutured, and a bandage is placed over it.

Recovery Period

The period of recovery depends on your overall health and the type of procedure done. You may experience mild pain and discomfort after the surgery, and a dental expert will recommend pain medications. You can also use anti-inflammatory medications to relieve swelling and pain.
