The Link Between Gum Disease and Kidney Health

How Gum Disease Affects Overall Health

Periodontal disease occurs when bacteria in dental plaque spread and cause inflammation below the gumline. The immune system response damages the tissues and bones surrounding and supporting the teeth. Advanced gum disease can cause chronic inflammation that reaches the heart and kidneys. Bacteria from the plaque can then enter the bloodstream, affecting other organs in the body.

Increased Risk of Kidney Issues

Studies indicate that the inflammation and bacteria associated with periodontal disease are linked to a higher risk of kidney function decline and kidney disease. One analysis found people with gum disease were at double the risk of developing chronic kidney disease. Their kidney function was also more likely to worsen over time compared to those with healthy gums. Controlling oral bacteria and inflammation may be key in protecting kidney health. Treating and preventing gum disease helps minimize harmful bacteria entering the bloodstream.

Take Steps to Protect Oral and Kidney Health

To reduce your risk of periodontal disease and associated health problems, you should brush and floss thoroughly twice a day, have professional dental cleanings every six months, quit smoking and limit alcohol intake, and manage chronic illnesses like diabetes. Alert your dentist to any signs of gum disease, such as red, swollen gums that bleed easily. Treating gum disease and keeping your mouth healthy may also reduce the chances of kidney disease.

Get Your Kidneys Checked Regularly Too

Along with dental exams, be sure to have annual checkups with your physician. Simple urine and blood tests can catch early signs of impaired kidney function before it becomes a bigger problem.

Taking good care of your oral and overall health is essential. Contact our office to discuss how we can help you reduce your risk of gum disease.
