Why Your Implants May Get Rejected by Your Mouth

Woman in dental chair looking at xray with dentist at Martin Periodontics in Mason, OHGetting dental implants is a big decision. After all, you're investing in your oral health and appearance for the long haul. But what if something goes wrong? What if your body rejects the implants?

While dental implant rejection is relatively rare, it can happen. In fact, studies show that the overall failure rate for dental implants is around 5%. This means that for every 20 implants placed, one may not integrate with the jawbone and will need to be removed.

So, what causes implant rejection? There are several factors that can play a role, including:

•  Poor oral hygiene: Just like your natural teeth, dental implants require proper care to stay healthy. If you don't brush and floss regularly, plaque and bacteria can build up around the implants, leading to inflammation and infection. This can damage the surrounding bone and make it more likely that the implant will fail.
•  Smoking: Smoking is a major risk factor for implant rejection. The chemicals in cigarette smoke can interfere with healing and increase the risk of infection. If you're a smoker, it's important to quit before getting dental implants.
•  Underlying health conditions: Certain health conditions, such as diabetes, osteoporosis, and autoimmune diseases, can also increase the risk of implant rejection. If you have any underlying health conditions, be sure to discuss them with your dentist before getting implants.
•  Implant placement: The way your implants are placed can also affect their success rate. If the implants are not placed correctly, they may not have enough bone support, which can lead to failure.
•  Implant quality: The quality of the implants themselves can also play a role. Make sure your dentist uses high-quality implants from a reputable manufacturer.

What Can You Do to Prevent Implant Rejection?

The good news is that there are several things you can do to prevent implant rejection:

•  Maintain excellent oral hygiene: Brush and floss your teeth twice a day, and be sure to clean around your implants using a special brush or floss.
•  See your dentist regularly: Get regular checkups and cleanings to ensure your implants are healthy.
•  Quit smoking: If you're a smoker, now is the time to quit.
•  Manage your health conditions: If you have any underlying health conditions, be sure to manage them properly.
•  Choose a qualified dentist: Make sure your dentist is experienced and qualified to place dental implants.

What Happens If Your Implant Gets Rejected?

If your implant does get rejected, don't worry. There are usually other options available. Your dentist may be able to remove the failed implant and place a new one. In some cases, you may need a bone graft to rebuild the bone that was lost around the implant.
