Should Coconut Oil Be Part of Your Regular Oral Hygiene Routine?

Posted on 10/15/2025 by Martin Periodontics
Coconut oilThere's always something new in the world of health and wellness, and oral care is no exception. Lately, coconut oil has been generating buzz as a natural remedy for everything from dry skin to weight loss, and even oral health. But before you swap out your regular toothpaste for a spoonful of coconut oil, let's take a closer look at the science behind this trend.

What is Oil Pulling?

Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice that involves swishing a tablespoon of oil in your mouth for 10-20 minutes, and then spitting it out. Traditionally, sesame or sunflower oil was used, but coconut oil has become increasingly popular in recent years due to its supposed health benefits.

What are the Claims about Coconut Oil and Oral Health?

Proponents of oil pulling claim that it can:

•  Reduce plaque and gingivitis: Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth, and gingivitis is the inflammation of your gums. While some studies suggest that oil pulling may have a modest effect on plaque and gingivitis, the evidence is limited and not conclusive.
•  Whiten teeth: Coconut oil contains lauric acid, which has some antimicrobial properties. However, there is no scientific evidence that oil pulling can whiten teeth.
•  Freshen breath: The act of swishing oil around your mouth may help temporarily remove odor-causing bacteria. However, this effect is likely short-lived.

What Does the Research Say?

While there have been a few studies on oil pulling, the results have been mixed. Some studies have shown a small reduction in plaque and gingivitis, while others have found no significant effect. More research is needed to determine the true effectiveness of oil pulling for oral health.

What Do Experts Recommend?

The American Dental Association (ADA) does not endorse oil pulling as a replacement for regular brushing, flossing, and seeing your dentist for regular checkups. These are still the cornerstones of good oral health. While oil pulling may be a safe and potentially beneficial addition to your oral hygiene routine, it should not be seen as a magic bullet.

The Bottom Line

If you're curious about trying oil pulling, talk to your dentist first. They can help you understand if it's right for you and how to incorporate it safely into your oral care routine. Remember, oil pulling should not replace your regular brushing and flossing habits.
