What should I know about a periodontistA periodontist is a specialist who deals in diagnosing, preventing, and treating gum diseases. Beyond going to dental school, a periodontist has to undergo training for three years to specialize in conducting restorative and cosmetic procedures where aesthetics and function are prioritized. Periodontists also perform other treatments like scaling and root planing. They also clean the surface of the teeth debridement of the root surface where the damaged tissue is removed.

When one should visit a periodontist.

The periodontist notices early signs of gum diseases. The following symptoms can be observed pain and oral discomfort pain can be traced to the specific teeth experiencing pain. If one is experiencing pain below, underneath, and within the gums, this can be a severe issue, and one should visit the periodontist regularly. As one grows, the gums recede naturally, and it should not be noticeable. Still, when one notices apparent reduction, this can be a gum recession coming from a periodontal issue.

When the gums swell, redden and bleed, if after brushing or flossing notices bleeding, swelling, or reddening of the gums, one should visit the periodontist. If one feels the teeth are becoming loose when one begins, the teeth are loose. This could be brought by a thin bone resulting from periodontal diseases. One should visit the periodontist.

What is the difference between a periodontist and a regular dentist?

A traditional dentist specializing in oral health issues treats them like a toothache and can uproot the teeth. In contrast, the periodontist specializes in diagnosing, treating gum diseases and can also place dental implants. They also conduct surgeries where the gum is needed to be placed in the correct position. If a dentist observes severe gum diseases, he recommends visiting the periodontist.
