What Is Gingivitis?

If you have heard about gingivitis, you may not know what it means. Gingivitis is a form of gum disease, and you need to know how to take care of your gums so that your gingivitis does not become more advanced.

Here is some additional information about gingivitis, and how it can affect your gums. You also need to understand that gum disease can be treated if it is caught early.

About Gingivitis

Gingivitis represents the first stage of gum disease. If you think you have gingivitis, here are some signs to look for.

First, you might notice that your gums don't look pink. Instead, they may look red or purple. They also might look puffy or swollen, which is a sign of gum disease. You may even have a little bit of gum pain when you drink or eat really hot or really cold foods and drinks. This is common because your gums may be more sensitive.

Also, when you brush or floss, you may notice you are spitting out blood into the sink when you rinse. You also might notice bleeding around your gums, or that your toothbrush is stained pink or red.

All of these are signs of gingivitis, or the first stage of gum disease. Luckily, gum disease in its early stages is very treatable.

What Do I Do?

If you think you have gingivitis, your first stop needs to be the dentist. They can help you figure out if you have gingivitis, or a more advanced stage of gum disease called periodontitis.
