Botox for CosmeticsYour smile says so much about you. However, even with perfectly straight white teeth, your appearance may not be where you want it to be. You may have lines and wrinkles around your mouth, a lip that over-recedes (causing a “gummy” smile), or other issues that keep your smile, and your appearance, from being everything you want it to be. At Martin Periodontics, we can help with Botox for cosmetic use. What is Botox?Botox, or botulinum toxin, is an injectable treatment used to lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It was first approved by the FDA in 1989 to treat issues such as crossed eyes and eyelid spasms. It wasn’t until 2002 that it was first approved for cosmetic use. What Cosmetic Issues Can Botox Treat?Botox can be used to treat a variety of cosmetic issues:
The Botox injections are strategically administered by targeting specific muscles around your mouth. We are trained to target the muscles that are causing your specific cosmetic issues. Botox injections limit the muscle function that is causing your problem. Your lips will no longer over-retract when you smile, avoiding the gumminess that otherwise mars your smile. The corners of your mouth will be able to turn up, instead of down, giving you the appearance of a true, beautiful smile. The muscles in your lips and chin are relaxed, eliminating the chronically “pursed” appearance. How Does Botox Work?Botox, when used for cosmetic purposes, treats fine lines and wrinkles by blocking nerve activity and relaxing the muscles. It is administered through an injection, making it a non-invasive procedure. It is essentially painless, although you may feel a slight pinch at the injection site when the needle is inserted into your skin. Just like Botox for any other use, the injections are not permanent. Typically, they will only last between 3 to 5 months. After that time, the muscles in and around your mouth will begin to regain their normal movement and will return to their previous functions. It may take several treatments to “retrain” those muscles so that they function the way you want them to. Regular Botox injections can help to provide you with a complete beautiful smile while giving you a much-needed boost of confidence. Doesn’t Botox Belong with the Cosmetic Surgeon?Cosmetic surgeons, along with dermatologists, were among the first to use Botox for cosmetic reasons for a long time. However, we spend every day working in and around the human mouth. We (cosmetic dentists) perform more procedures in the facial region than any other type of doctor. We are experienced in the skeletal structure of your face, along with its physiology, vascular and nervous systems. While we often spend time restoring your teeth and gums to provide you with a bright, beautiful smile, fixing lines and wrinkles around the lips, chin, eyes, and forehead can help to complete it, giving you the appearance you have always dreamed of.
